Sunshine & Singletrack

It’s time to put that sweet margarita down, wade out of the swim-up bar and cover up that sunburn. We’ve all enjoyed this side of Mexico, now it’s time to experience the authentic version (and then return to the swim-up bar). This winter-escape is based in the state of Jalisco’s Sierra Madre mountains and the town of Mascota. Surrounded by pine-covered mountains and small villages, quaint Mascota is an agricultural town with old-fashion cobblestone streets flanked by colonial style houses, a few simple mercados, an impressive central plaza and several tasty nighttime food stalls with delicious chili-spiced cuisine. The locals don cowboy hats, ride horses through town, drive dusty pick-up trucks and are very hospitable and very real. Our hotel is a beautiful hacienda with lots of original charm with a large courtyard and walking distance to town. Do bring your earplugs though as the region is known for breeding fighting roosters and mornings can be noisy. The riding in the area consists of easy shuttles up paved roads to a network of ten fun enduro singletrack trails through pine and oak forests. We’ll also spend two nights at our hotel in the historical center of Puerto Vallarta and a full day of riding with on trails with sea views. Puerto Vallarta and its sparkling blue beach-laden Pacific coast and stylish restaurants is a nice complement to Mascota.

Day 1: Arrive to Puerto Vallarta.

Arrive at Puerto Vallarta airport and be greeted by your guide. Transfer two hours to Mascota, build bikes and explore town. Sleep:

Day 2: Ride Mascota.

This morning we transfer 40 minutes up a paved road that snakes its way through the mountains and a landscape of pine trees, blue agave plantations and golden fields. Our first ride dubbed Columpios is generally flowy with some technical rock gardens sections to keep you on your toes. After lunch it’s a short shuttle to Caracol trail with views of the sea on a clear day and a long descent to a beautiful valley. Sleep:

Day 3: Ride Mascota.

Today’s ride is the most technical in the area, dubbed Intrepida. After our morning shuttle and a short climb we begin on a flowy section followed by legit rock gardens, some steep and loose sections. Then it’s a 15 minute hike-a-bike and more singletrack to the town of Yerbuena. Next laps is on Santito trail with a sweet ridge with views of the valley bellow. Sleep:

Day 4: Ride San Sebastian del Oeste.

This morning we transfer an hour to the impressive colonial town of San Sebastian del Oeste. It’s remote setting nestled in the mountains and surrounded by forests has left it untouched and very authentic. Here we’ll ride La Bufa trail, a mostly downhill singletrack descent from a high point with sweeping views. Sleep:

Day 5: Ride Mascota. Transfer to Puerto Vallarta.

This morning we’ll choose a trail that suits the group’s desires. After lunch it’s a short 20 minute shuttle to Espinilluda trail, a sweet and buffed pedal along a picturesque ridge littered with craggy old oak trees where you can ride right back to town. This afternoon we’ll pack up, check out of the hotel and drive two hours to the central Puerto Vallarta. Sleep:

Day 6: Ride Puerto Vallarta.

Perhaps start the day with a swim in the sea? Then we’ll load up the truck for the first of three shuttles today which takes us to 1100 meters above sea level. Today’s rides are varied with some super flowy, some short climbs, some steeps and pedally sections. Our last trail of the day ends on the beach, how perfect! Sleep:

Day 7: Transfer to Puerto Vallarta Airport for flights home.

Short transfer to Puerto Vallarta airport to catch your departure flight. Bon voyage!
